Summer Holiday Beauty Tips & Picks

Hey, before you know it, it’s mid-year already! For some of us, mid-year usually means kids’ school break and holidays, right?

Back then, whenever I go on summer holidays, I rarely gave much thought on makeup—the right skincare would suffice. But nowadays, I realize we still have to look good on holidays, yes, including when going to tropical destinations in the summer, where makeup could melt in under two minutes. We want to look great in our pictures, no? Mbak Sari would agree with me on this!

Here are my main beauty tips and picks for summer holidays:

Find a good sunscreen that works under your makeup. This is super important, but hard to do in the same time. Ideally, you want a sunscreen that a) gives good protection; b) has a matte or semi-matte finish; c) quick to absorb and non-greasy; d) doesn’t give white cast for your skintone. It takes some time, and trial & error to find the perfect one, therefore, don’t wait until you really need one before searching.

When applying, it’s also vital to give the sunscreen enough time to sink in before applying other makeup, to ensure your makeup sits on the skin properly.

Use tinted moisturizers. I’m also a fan of BB creams. Either one you like, pack those instead of foundation for your summer holiday. The good thing about them is that they usually contain SPF—although they should never substitute you sunscreen—and they’re also lighter and more comfortable on the skin.

Yes, they only offer sheer coverage, but IMO you don’t really need full coverage during summer vacations, anyway. Why? First, because you’re on a holiday! Relax! Second, because even when my skin is ugly, it still looks great when photographed under natural lightings! The results of being photographed under the sun, compared to being photographed under indoor lighting, are significantly different. So don’t worry about looking perfect. For summer holidays, tinted moisturizers or BB creams (with light dabs of concealer, if necessary) are enough for a polished look.

Of course, go waterproof! Waterproof or water-resistant makeup will save you from the nightmare of budging, creasing, and smudging. You may not be swimming, but you’ll still need them, as the sweat, humidity, and even wudhu’ could take a toll on things like eyeliners and mascaras.

For colors, focus on one area. During summer holidays, keeping your look minimal and simple is the safest bet. On the other hand, I feel summer holidays are the perfect occasion to apply some bright colors for that ‘tropical’ feel. If you’re like me, you can focus on either lips or eyes and keep everything else simple. However, if I have to pick either one, I would choose highlighting my eyes with a pop of color.

Go with stains. I’m actually not the biggest fan of lip and cheek stains since they stubbornly stay on my fingers and also tricky to blend. However, they do have better staying power under the heat AND they look more natural. If you still can’t get a hold of tints, consider cream/gel blushes.

Carry around a spray mist. A mist can be a lifesaver. It refreshes your face, helps set your makeup, and for ladies with dry-skin ladies, it keeps skin from dehydrating, so you don’t have to put on more moisturizer than you actually need.

Bring a dry shampoo. This is a classic problem for me during summer holidays: my scalp regularly feels so sweaty and sticky, yet, I can’t be washing my hair every day during the vacation because I often don’t have the time. What I do is just flip my head upside down and spray dry shampoo all over. Voilà—volume and no-more sticky feeling.
