Here are the interview questions that we asked to this year's winners! Nadia Juliana and Muhammad Aulia Nurrahman (Rama) took time out of their schedules to answer a couple of question we had for them. What thoughts went through your head when you heard your names announced? Nadia: Thank you so much! It felt so surreal. I didn't set my expectations too high and was having fun with the other contestants on stage, because I figured I would be happy regardless which of us won. But I can't lie, it does feel great to be the one who won. Rama: Thank you :D ! It was unpredictable for me, so I just ended up thinking of ways preserve batik in my brain. It was also so fun to get to know other contestants from other regions in Indonesia. I basically nothing to lose in this competition, so I just did my best. Why did you decide to take part in PBBN? Nadia: I went to Gebyar Batik Muda Nusantara at Kota Kasablanka on August. While I was taking part in the batik workshop, I was told that they are holding an open registration for the next batch of Putra Putri Batik Nusantara contestants, so I decided to give it a shot. Rama: I fell in love with batik in Senior High School, and have always had a curiosity to learn more about batik. I have been interested in PPBN since 2011, but finally committed and was ready to join PPBN in 2013. My big wish with this competition was to explore and commit myself to preserve Indonesian heritage, especially batik. <a rel="attachment wp-att-66600" href="http://www.fashionesedaily.com/blog/2013/10/12/our-interview-with-putra-putri-batik-nusantara-2013-winners/2-135/"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66600" title="2" src="//www.fashionesedaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/23.png" alt="" width="600" height="900" /></a> What did you learn from your time during PBBN quarantine and finals? Nadia: I feel embarrassed as a part of the younger generation, that after 21 years of life, I have not contributed anything to the rich heritage that Indonesia has. I felt so ignorant and thought it was not part of my responsibility. In the quarantine and finals, I thought to myself that win or lose, I have to take part in spreading the art of batik to young people, even if it takes one person at a time. Rama: I learned how we respect to indonesian cultures and heritage, especially batik. As youth, it is important to impact others and let our peers know why should we really have to appreciate batik. I also learned how to respect diversity, given that we all came from various regions in indonesia. What do you hope to achieve in your campaign to help preserve and promote batik? Nadia: I want people to not only know how Batik is created and the philosophies behind them, but for others to also learn to appreciate what batik truly means to Indonesia. When they have that sense of belonging for batik, it will automatically be contagious and spread to others nationally and even internationally. Rama: I want make people understand how batik can become an important element to improve creative economy Indonesia. We know that batik makers are now facing challenges, given the competition with textiles from other countries. But I believe that someday Indonesian people will realize how important batik as Indonesian heritage, and one that is capable of improving Indonesia's creative economy. <a rel="attachment wp-att-66601" href="http://www.fashionesedaily.com/blog/2013/10/12/our-interview-with-putra-putri-batik-nusantara-2013-winners/ppbn-2/"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-66601" title="PPBN" src="//www.fashionesedaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/PPBN1.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="400" /></a> What is your favorite style of batik, and why? Nadia: This is a tough one! But I have to say Batik Betawi. I love how youthful and how festive the colors are. It was also what I got to represent in the competition! Rama: Batik Pesisir! Especially Batik Madura, which is dominated by with strong colors such as red, green, and light blue. I also  fell in love with how the people of Madura produce their batik in traditional ways. What top-notch people. Congratulations once more to Rama and Nadia! We hope that their new reign as Putra Putri Batik Nusantara will take them on meaningful adventures that will not only teach them a thing or two about representing a national treasure, but one that will also inspire those they come into contact with.
