Bridal Flat Shoes: Why Not?

So here’s the deal: I’m not the world’s biggest fan of high heels because I literally cannot stand standing in them for a long time. But I’d be lying if I said I  have no high heels in my personal collection at all. Heck, I still love shoes as much as the next girl.

At my wedding, however, I boldly decided to NOT wear high heels because I wanted to mingle with the crowds and can’t possibly do it if I’m too busy wincing out of discomfort and pain. After thinking about it for a long time, and after careful consideration of my wedding dress and kebaya, I settled on gold flat shoes should help me survive the big day. After all, it was not a huge wedding and I wanted to keep things casual.

The search of the perfect flats began at daybreak. My criteria was clear: the shoes should match my off-white kebaya and dress, which were embellished with tiny golden beads. After scouring stores at several malls, I settled on a pair of bright gold Zara ballet flats. Yes, the shopping trip included an argument with Mom as she thought a kebaya should be worn with proper kain should NOT be paired with ballet flats. She insisted on a pair of gold slippers purchased from Bindu Samtani at Pondok Indah Mall, and I had to compromise. Flats for the dress and heels for the kebaya.

The big day came and the ballet flats worked really well with my dress. But when it came time to don the kebaya, I felt nothing but a sharp pain radiating from my toes up to my knees after standing up for three straight hours in nine centimeter heels. Now, the perks of having a home wedding is how you can just throw your mom a sad puppy-eyed look, and in her maternal mercy, she will allow you to wear your ballet flats.
