Benefit POREfessional – Worth a Try!

I am avid fan of Benefit Cosmetics. I’ve always found that most of their products are great and a lot of times multitasking. The charming packaging and tag lines are an added bonus. Those gorgeous box o’ powders are something that I still use to this day.

I had a chance to try one of their primers, The POREfessional.

What it is: A PRO balm that minimizes the appearance of pores.

What it does: Quickly minimizes the appearance of pores & fine lines for smoother-than-smooth skin! Translucent, oil-free formula complements all skin tones and helps makeup stay put. It contains a Vitamin E derivative, known to protect skin from free radicals. Benefit says that we could apply this silky, lightweight balm alone, under or over makeup.

First off, this is the first silicone-based primer I’ve ever tried. I have always wondered how this type of primer would feel against the skin. I’ve also read that some people have a bad reaction to silicone ingredients. So I had my reservations.

The first time I tried it, I was intrigued by the super smooth feel of it. It’s light beige-colored, but goes transparent when applied. It is silky on the skin, glides on easily and creates a nice smooth surface for makeup. As far as minimizing the appearance of pores and fine lines, I have to agree that it does the job fairly well. However, the whole thing was rather unusual to me, because it didn’t feel like my own skin. Because of this, I wondered how it would work on different types of foundations.

So, to be fair, I tried this with three of my favorite foundations; Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk (GALS), Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua (VLA) and Burberry Sheer Foundation (SF). GALS has the usual texture of liquid foundation, not too runny, just perfect. Chanel VLA is water-based. Burberry SF has a cream gel-like texture and it’s on thicker side.

Out of the three, I was most concerned with Chanel VLA being the water-based foundation. I wasn’t sure how it would adhere to the silky base. Well, it actually worked just fine, with the exception on the nose area being a little patchy. But that’s not a big deal. It works with GALS and Burberry SF beautifully. Another thing, it makes the foundations glide on better and blend in with the skin easier. And the smooth finish! Wow, now I understand why some people love using silicone-based primer. I don’t have perfect skin to begin with. With this, the whole texture of my skin is improved. My complexion looks smoother than ever! I also felt my foundations gave a higher coverage and the overall look is more flawless. LOVE!

I noticed that right away upon application, POREfessional mattifies the skin. Therefore, when I apply the foundation, it becomes more matte in finish. From the three foundations I’ve tried, I can say that it keeps the oil/sebum at bay longer throughout the day. My skin is on the normal-dry (often dehydrated) side and it didn’t dry my skin out. It held up my makeup nicely too. My face still looks fresh at the end of day. Another plus point!

Now, here comes the low points.

First, no SPF. Although I wear sunscreen underneath, I still want my primer to have SPF for an added protection. But, this is not crucial.

Second, although I’m quite sure I have little to no reaction to silicone, I wouldn’t want to wear this everyday either. This is a product that’s marketed to minimize the appearance of pores; I read it as a recipe for congested pores.

A major tip: apply it thinly. Less is more.

One time I applied it a little too thick, and by the end of day, I had little bumps on the pores on the sides of my nose/cheek area. I used my FAB Facial Radiance Pads for a couple of days and the bumps subdued. However, this made me realize that I don’t want to wear it daily.

In a nutshell, I’m very much so in love with Benefit POREfessional for the smoother finish it gives to my makeup. Although it mattifies the skin, I think this is still suitable for all skin types, especially if you prefer satin to matte finish. Yes, granted, I won’t be wearing it everyday, but this is still a good product nevertheless.

The big question, would I get this in full size? Yes!

Now that I know that as long as I apply it thinly and not wearing it everyday, I should be fine. And so is my skin :)
