At Vaseline media discussion day, I paid attention to a presentation by dr. Shannaz Nadia Yusharyahya, SpKK about the right treatment to make the skin healthy. But before we think of the treatment, it’s important for us to determine whether our skin is healthy or not.
How to tell that your skin is healthy or not?
- Healthy skin should have: moisturized, soft, smooth, tight, able to regenerate itself every 28 days and have even tone.
- Unhealthy skin usually has any of these signs: looks dull, feels rough, dry, unelastic, has hyperpigmentation spots and visible veins.
Here are the examples of both healthy and unhealthy skin. The picture on left shows healthy skin while the right picture shows a woman with aging skin apparent on her hand.
As we age, the condition of our skin will deteriorate. How do you think your skin’s condition would be at the different stages?
- At the age of 20s, skin is at its golden moment. It’s when moisture level of the skin reaches best condition, as well as skin’s elasticity and skin tone.
- As we enter the age of 30’s, aging signs start to appear. Wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, hyperpigmentation and dullness are found on the skin. It is because the skin regeneration process is getting slow.
At the pictures below, we can see how skin appearance and texture change as we get older.
Actually, there are two types of skin aging process: intrinsic (chronological aging) and extrinsic (photoaging).
- Chronological aging is a physical process that has been programmed genetically. This process depends on genetic, race and hormonal factors.
- Photoaging is often called as early or premature aging that is affected by external factors such as pollution, insufficient nutrition, smoking and disease.
To help the skin in facing aging process, dr. Shannaz suggest us to:
- Use moisturizer that contains retinol to increase collagen level on the skin and promote cell regeneration; Alpha Hidroxy Acid (AHA) to reduce wrinkles and enhance the production of new stratum corneum and collagen; Vitamin B3 to reduce pigmentation and increase natural emollient of the skin; antioxidant to fight harmful free radicals, prevent wrinkles and fix skintone and texture.
- Always use sunscreen before being exposed to sun
- Treat our facial and body skin equally. Women care much about their facial skin but they often neglect skin of their body.
- Eat food that contains antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables. The more colorful food we eat, the more antioxidant beneficial to skin that we get.
- Keeping up healthy lifestyle, avoid stress, unhealthy food or beverage, and don’t forget to have enough sleep.
Perhaps it isn’t the first time you hear about the tips above, but let’s memorize them and start giving the right treatment for our skin.
