Great Singapore Sale; Tips From The ‘Locals’, Part 1

The annual Great Singapore Sale has been started for two weeks. If you haven’t made any plan you still have plenty of time as it won’t end until July 26. Now not only clothes that will be marked down, participated food establishments are going to offer discounts too for the hungry shopaholics.

Singapore is famous for its convenience, everywhere is just a few MRT stops away, it’s safe, almost everyone speaks English and everywhere we go, you’ll find Indonesians too, so we won’t feel like strangers. And now visiting Singapore has become even more easier and cheaper now that we don’t have to pay for the fiscal. Many airlines are offering awesome deals too. The last time I went there was in 2003..it’s been a while. I wish I could just grab my ‘empty’ suitcase and hop on the plane now..:D

If you are planning to go there, don’t forget to get the tourist privilege card for more exclusive treatment coupons. Also aim beyond Orchard and visit the ethnic zone such as Little India, Chinatown and Arab Street.
Here’s some information from the ‘locals’ (Four FDers who’ve been living in Singapore..:D) to guide you through the Great Singapore Sale journey

1. Must Visit/Favorite Mall

  • sLesTa: Vivo city, cause it has all the middle class (read: affordable) stores you need. It’s like a one stop shopping. They have Tangs with its variety of make-up like Mac, Bobbi Brown, Chanel, etc and brands like Zara, Mango, Guess, Forever 21, Marks & Spencer, GAP and many more. More importantly it also caters to family cause it has very good facilities for baby changing room, water park, food courts (must try Food Republic and Toast Box cafes!), and giant supermarket as well as the movie studio. You can also go to Sentosa from here since the cable car to Sentosa starts from here, and the best part is, the MRT is right underneath the mall.
  • Chint13: Compass Point at Sengkang, just four bus stop away from our apartment, and there’s lots of basic shops/cafe/resto there. Plaza Singapura, again just because we don’t have to change MRT line :D and also for the cinema. Other than those two: Vivo City of course.

2. Favorite Local Brands/Designers

  • sLesTa: Must i say? Charles & Keith, of course!! haha..
  • Shop Always: Charles & Keith.
GG5 and Pepper Plus for casual working clothes, bahan kaosnya enak, lemes dan affordable. Kalo lagi sale, bisa dapet SGD 5-15 (that’s what I call sale price!) :D . Charles & Keith? udah gak usah diceritain lagi layaw.. hehehehe.

3. Small shops for hidden treasures

  • sLesTa: You may want to check out Central. It’s the mall in Central Quay. There are many small boutiques that sell products by local designers.

4. Things that are must-buy because they’re cheaper in Singapore

  • sLesTa: Again, Charles & Keith! always check the sale area cause they ALWAYS have something on sale. If you’re lucky, you’ll find the shoes for less than SGD20! Cannot have better bargain than that! I also suggest you check out chain stores like Watson, especially the one in Ngee Ann City (basement 2). It’s big and it has wide variety of beauty products that you can’t find in other Watson stores in Singapore, for example: Cure Natural Aqua gel.
  • Shop Always: Household, Electronics, Computer/Laptop, Kosmetik, Perfume.
  • Chint13: Barang2nya I K E A say no more.. hehehehe. Sayangnya Ikea tuh gak ikutin GSS sih timing Sale-nya.

5. Tips to Bargain with ‘Untie & Uncle’

  • sLesTa: I’m not exactly one who can bargain, but my tips would be, learn Singlish! Only with that you can get better deals :)
  • Shop Always: Kayaknya kita kudu SKSD dikit sama mereka, ajak ngobrol, ketawa-ketawa.
