 <div class="container">If you search for "red lipstick" in the Female Daily archives, you will be greeted with an encyclopedic collection of red lipstick reviews and manifestos from the people who love them. Not all red lipsticks are created equal: <a href="http://femaledaily.com/blog/author/pablohoney/" target="_blank">Pablohoney</a> has reviewed plenty reviews of different red lipsticks, but still has different things to say about each one. FD member Angelajess <a href="http://femaledaily.com/blog/2013/05/21/cant-get-enough-of-red-lipsticks/" target="_blank">has a steadily burgeoning collection of reds</a>, and it doesn't look like she plans on stopping the hoarding habit anytime soon. Designer Nanida Jenahara Nasution <a href="http://femaledaily.com/blog/2013/02/19/red-lips-ala-jenahara/" target="_blank">has nothing but praise for red lipstick</a>, claiming that there's a red shade somewhere out there for everybody. A lot of us here at FDHQ have at least one red lipstick on hand at all times -- we can't get enough of it. Humanity has been artificially tinting lips since the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipstick#cite_note-1" target="_blank">Sumerians rolled into the picture about 5,000 years ago</a>, and since then the connotation behind a woman wearing red lipstick has fluctuated from being taboo (Victorian England) to empowering (WW2-era United States). What once was a cosmetic product associated with prostitution in the West has become a worldwide feminist symbol. Today, a woman who wears red lipstick is immediately measured as being feisty, no-nonsense carpe diem-types. I want to be that woman too, and that's the exact feeling I get when I wear red lipstick. At its core biological level, red lips are deemed attractive because they are the mark of a healthy woman of child-bearing age. Our fascination with blood-red lips may be purely evolutionary -- a primal animal instinct inherited from our ancestors' stone-age DNA -- but we've turned it from being the marker of a healthy woman into a trademark banner of an assertive woman. <object width="640" height="360" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="//www.youtube.com/v/XONY6ZLH4V4?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="640" height="360" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="//www.youtube.com/v/XONY6ZLH4V4?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object> Characters who wear red lipstick in movies are usually femme fatale types, or strong-willed characters with more to them than pretty faces: think about <a href="http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Jessica_Rabbit" target="_blank">Jessica Rabbit</a>, <a href="http://jamesbond.wikia.com/wiki/Vesper_Lynd_(Eva_Green)" target="_blank">Vesper Lynd</a>, and <a href="http://jamesbond.wikia.com/wiki/Vesper_Lynd_(Eva_Green)" target="_blank">Mia Wallace</a>. When you see a character put on red lipstick in a movie, that usually means that something really important is about to go down in the plot. So to demonstrate the power of red lipstick in films, here are a couple of famous red lips from celluloid, followed by recommendations shades you can wear to channel the same sort of cinematic vibe. <a href="http://femaledaily.com/?p=89866&amp;page=2">Next: Grease &gt;&gt;</a>  Sandy (played by Olivia Newton-John) in Grease <a href="http://femaledaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/grease.png"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-89867" alt="grease" src="//femaledaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/grease-600x506.png" width="600" height="506" /></a> Olivia Newton-John looked like the oldest high school student in North America when she stepped up as Sandy, the female lead in this 1978 musical. Her character experiences a transition from the docile goody two shoes into a regulation babe by the end of the movie. The red lip she wears in her "Bad Sandy" persona is not the boldest red on this list: it's more of a warm red with plum undertones, something that you can still wear out without snagging too much attention from traditional blue-reds. The scene is filmed in a way that depicted her as a a warrior putting on war paint before battle. The movie is set in a parallel universe-World War 2 Europe, but it does not stray from the cosmetics conventions of the 1940s that we know. The red here we see is the classic matte blue-red, reminiscent of the beauty ideals that were established in that decade. I think Ursula is one of he more misunderstood Disney villains; she was just a businesswoman who rendered services, and she applied the red lipstick before making her sales pitch to Ariel. As far as I'm concerned, ARIEL is the real villain of this movie: Ariel was the one reneged on the contract that she signed on her own volition. Boo, Ariel, boo. I'm writing up a bad review of you when I see you on eBay. Since first watching this scene as a kid, I've been waiting for a tube  of lipstick that looks just like Ursula's. Her shade is a universally-flattering cool blue-red with coral tones and a slightly glossy finish to it -- the perfect shade for the perfect woman. But you know what? I'd do anything to pull off a dark red like Tim Curry in the movie, who is so nonchalant and flippant about the fact that he's wearing a bold lipstick. Thankfully for me, <a href="http://instagram.com/p/sY3zdFpNJy/?modal=true" target="_blank">MAC will soon be releasing a special collection inspired by this kitschy musical</a>!
