Welcome to the Future: Projection Mapping Makeup

seo-img-article

This is some The Jetsons-level business we’ve got going on right here: Omote is a system that marries projection mapping and facial tracking technologies with makeup. You might already be familiar with projection mapping used on buildings, and you’ve already used tracking technology if you’ve ever played with a Xbox Kinect.

The hypnotic video below is the result of a collaboration between CGI experts and makeup artists, led by Japan’s Nobumichi Asai. Watch as a barrage of lights project electronic graphics onto the bare-faced model, to result in what has been described as “electronic makeup.”

I enjoy the ritual of trying on makeup at beauty counters, but sometimes I am put off by the idea that a million people have tried out the same tester lipstick. I’d love to see this technology in makeup counters of the future, so customers can try out a shade of lipstick or eye shadow — or even an entire look! — without actually applying a previously-used product onto their skin.

Watch this video (seriously, it’s amazing), and let me know if you like the idea of electronically simulated makeup.
