Liebeskind Berlin Popup Store Opens in Plaza Indonesia

seo-img-article

If you’ve been to Plaza Indonesia recently, you may have spotted this pop-up store spring (seemingly) overnight:

DSC01777Located on the second storey right across from Urban Icon, this is a retail space that offers items from Liebeskind Berlin. Since the founding of this German company in 2003, it has successfully saturated the European market, where — to put it bluntly — they are kind of a big deal. The brand also has a solid presence in the US, Japan, and Australia, but this is their first foray in Southeast Asia (via Urban Icon, where we first were introduced to the brand at a special gathering with Urban Icon last year).

DSC01795I was given a one-on-one tour of the space with the brand’s Europe Sales Director, Michael Stührenberg. Since the initial sales of the bags through Urban Icon last year, he tells me he was happy with the positive response to the products and hopes to recreate their success here in Jakarta. Also available under the Liebeskind Berlin roster are small leather goods, shoes, and a ready-to-wear line, but the latter two have yet to make it to our shores. Hopefully with increasing popularity of the brand, we will see those arrive in time 🙂

DSC01772Success should come easy, though, since the products are well-suited to city living: the bags have a fantastic industrial rock-chic look to them, and while they initially started off (and came to be known) for their leather bag creations, they have expanded their core collections to include other materials like canvas. Most of the leather has been treated and dyed in processes that make them extra hardy — and it helps that a good portion of the leather is buffalo, which is more flexible and lightweight than cowhide.

DSC01800Michael tells me that the brand’s Berlin-based design team are a tight-knit group of individuals with great style and camaraderie. The word “unique” cropped up a lot during the interview, and he says that “unique” is the key style aspect that they always try to inject into their designs; everything else is icing on the cake.

One aspect of Liebeskind bags that I personally enjoy is practicality: there’s room in the bags for everything and the kitchen sink. There are nooks and crannies for just about everything that an urban warrior needs for her day, so I was surprised to learn when Michael tells me that the designers are too engaged in working on the unique aspect of the bag to consider utility. Perhaps when your national DNA is synonymous with the word “efficiency,” practicality and attention to detail immediately come standard, and not as special features 😉

If you want one of these beauties for yourself, the pop-up store at Plaza Indonesia will be around until September — but you can still check them out at any Urban Icon store (or its online shop) near you.
