Buying presents for people is a fairly stressful endeavor for me, because I’m a poor judge of identifying an individual’s desires and needs. Christmas and birthdays are not my forte, but I’ve managed to reconcile this issue by sticking to one solution: buying personalized or one-of-a-kind gifts. This way, I minimize the chances of a) having the gift re-gifted, and b) giving someone a gift they’ve already received from someone else. True story: two different people once bought me the same DVD box set of World War II documentaries. I guess it’s nice that my interests make it easy for other people to buy stuff for me, but not so fun if I get the same gift twice.
Anyway, here’s a list of gift ideas that you can pick up when you’ve hit the gift-giving idea wall:
For the Work Colleague: Commissioned Sketch Portrait
During the grand launch of Maison Lancôme at LOTTE Shopping Avenue, guests walked away with sketch portraits done on the spot by Bandung-based illustrator Diani Apasari. Commissioned sketch portraits are probably the most truly authentic “one-of-a-kind” gift, because, well there’s only one copy of every person (unless you work with twins, obviously). I enjoyed my sketch so much that I’ve made it into my avatar for all my social media accounts!
For the BFF: Friendship Bracelets
These are not the friendship bracelets you grew up with: Loueve Jewels takes the humble friendship bracelet and kicks it up a notch by adding studs, rhinestones, and lining each number with suede leather. Wear them on their own or stacked for an arm party so boisterous that the next door neighbors have called the cops Check out their Instagram for regularly-updated dosage of accessories goodness.
For the Beach Bunny: Havaianas x Swarovski
You don’t really need a beach to sport these blinged-up flip flops anymore. If you’re in Jakarta, head down to Pacific Place’s Crystal Christmas exhibition by Swarovski for inspiration, and then check out the ‘Make Your Own Havaianas’ promotion at the Havaianas pop-up store at Galeries Lafayette. Here, you can pick out the sole, strap, and Swarovski stud color of your choice to best suit the giftee.
For the nomad in your life, help her keep her travel essentials in check with a beautiful two-tone handmade travel wallet by Oma Anna. Get her name or initials embossed onto the synthetic leather to take the personalization to a new level. The travel wallet features two outer pockets, two inner pockets, and three cardholders to keep her important things like passport, cellphone, money, cash, credit cards, and documents in one place.
Know someone who enjoys changing their nail polish every couple of days or so? Feed the habit by helping her accessorize her ever-changing talons. The Italian-made DuePunti rings feature a 0.2 carat diamond encased in a silicone band that come in a wide variety of colors. Pick out a stack made up of her favorite colors, or of every color on the spectrum to go with whatever nail polish shade happens to strike her fancy. And at IDR 690,000, it’s an affordable luxury that you can pick up for yourself too.
