Juara Skincare Champions Traditional Indonesian Beauty Secrets

Remember Juara Skincare, the plucky New York-born brand that championed Indonesian jamu-inspired skincare outside of Indonesia? They invited us to an intimate editors’ gathering in the middle of Jakarta Fashion Week, where they became a partner to the the Resort/SS ’14 show by Ardistia New York.

Earlier that week, I had the opportunity to chat with its Indonesian-American founder, Metta Murdaya. She had a lot of really interesting things to say on the evolution of the brand image, but my main query was whether or not the founders ever worried about the “Inspired by Indonesian Botanicals” slogan being a boon to sales since, you know, our reputation as a country is not the greatest. Turns out their trust in the product and product philosophy were so strong that all other worries were placed in the back burner. The four founders —  Metta, Yoshiko Roth, Jill Sung, and Tami Chuang — knew that they had a really good product on their hands and wanted to share it with the world.

While the formulas were rooted in traditional Indonesian jamu recipes, all raw ingredients were sourced from the United States for reasons of safety and quality control reasons. The final iteration of each product — every scrub, moisturizer, cleanser, everything! — was backed up by solid proof of the ingredients’ efficacy in accomplishing their claims.

So we showed up bright and early at Senayan City for the editors’ gathering, ready to enjoy this happy East-meets-West marriage. We were greeted by where a range of different products were laid out for everyone to try out. My obsession with body care products had me making a beeline for a couple of promising looking tubs, and here’s what I ended up loving:
