Preserving a National Craft with Putra Putri Batik Nusantara 2013
We’ve seen plenty of efforts taken on the national scale to help sustain and develop batik, but nothing quite like this: since 2011, Ikatan Pecinta Batik Nusantara (IPBN) with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy have done something pretty special to engage younger generations of Indonesians in the propagation of this national art form. Their efforts culminated into Putra Putri Batik Nusantara, an annual pageant which hopes to raise awareness and interest among young Indonesian to encourage the continuation of the craft.
Contestants of Putra Putri Batik Nusantara 2013 are selected based on their passion, talent, and desire to preserve and promote batik. Winners from previous years have kept true to this commitment by representing at events that implement batik workshops at international student exchanges, workshops, and fashion shows. They also play a role in promoting Indonesian tourism when they take part in roadshows that took place in European cities, including Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, and London just to name a few.
The selection process is tough and competitive: hundreds of hopefuls submitted applications, but these numbers were whittled down to a slim selection of 57 finalists. Semi-finalists from all over the country flocked to Jakarta for the next round of selections to pare the entries down to a total of no more than 14 pairs, or 28 finalists. All individuals went through three stages of judging while donning batik from all over the archipelago. They also showed off a personal talent–the judges saw everything from singing and dancing to promoting batik-related works.
After completing the thorough judging process, fourteen pairs were eventually selected as Finalists of Putra Putri Batik Nusantara. They will continue to be scrutinized through a series of activities and quarantines in Jakarta between September 29 to October 3. The grand finale will take place at Taman Ismail Marzuki, which will surely be a pretty spectacular affair. Good luck to all the yound men and women taking part in this event, and !
