What perfume did you wear on Valentine’s Day yesterday?

Perfumes play such an important part in my everyday life that I think it takes me longer to choose which perfume to wear compared to choosing an outfit. Perfumes can evoke different emotions and bring forward certain memories and moods. If I chose the wrong perfume, I might end up with a different mood than I originally planned ๐Ÿ™‚

For special occasions, of course the thought process that goes behind choosing the right fragrance becomes more complex. Take Valentine’s Day for example. I am actually not the type of person who celebrates Valentine’s Day. In fact, as far as I can recall, I never do anything special to celebrate it my whole life. This time, an invitation came to me and it was very hard for me to resist. ๐Ÿ™‚

I immediately knew I wanted to wear one of my Annick Goutal fragrances. But the question is, which one? Annick Goutal has a few “romantic” fragrances. There’s the ever popular Petite Cherie, the young and bubbly Quel Amour which I wear almost everyday, but I wanted something more complex, something intoxicating and more sensual, almost like love itself. Which is why I ended up choosing Grand Amour (which literally means Big Love).

Grand Amour was created by Annick Goutal herself, with the help of perfumer Isabelle Doyen. Gran Amour was devoted to her husband, the cellist Allain Meunier. From the first spray, you will know that this is not the fragrance for all women, especially those who prefer soft, whispery scent. This is a fragrance for a woman who knows what she wants-feminine but fearless, lives and loves passionately and won’t settle for anything less.

Grand Amour opens with a lush floral bouquet, which sheds one layer after another seductively. Notes of white lily, hyacinth and honeysuckle dominate, with a touch of myrrh surfacing from the richness of the florals. As the perfume settles on my skin, I could smell the heady Turkish Rose and Jasmine, rounded by a very seductive warm trail of amber. This is where the powdery element of the fragrance shows up and gives the tenderness that tones down the bold opening. What I use is Grand Amour EDT and unlike other Annick Goutal EDTs, this one has a lot more longevity. What I find most pleasing from this fragrance is it retains the mysterious richness even until the base surfaces. A mixture of amber, vanilla and musk somehow create an almost leather-like scent on my skin. A very soft leather though. This makes me think of the perfect Valentine’s Day date, where, as the night progresses, things become more interesting and you start losing track of time. ๐Ÿ™‚

But as I said, this is not a fragrance for everyone. I suggest you sample it first before buying a whole bottle. But if it catches your breath the way it did mine when I first wore it, I hope you’ll find your Big Love for Grand Amour.

And of course I also hope you’ll find your Big Love in life as well. Or have you? ๐Ÿ™‚
