My birthday with our fashionista du jour’s is only a day apart. I guess that explains why I like her style a lot—we most likely have the same taste! And I also believe she’d be perfect for this episode of A Week in Style.

Meet Kara Gunawan. Wife, daughter (of the famed nutritionist Andang Gunawan), mother (to almost 2-years-old son Aidan), writer, baker, traveler, and even singer – though not professionally anymore. I’ve known her since high-school days, and though we went through many changes in life, Kara’s understated edgy-chic vogue remains the same. And I personally hope it will always be 😉

Before we take a look at her fabulous style in a week, let’s get to know her a bit more:

Hey, Kara! Can you tell us a bit about yourself, and your current daily activities?

I’m a contributor writer for Nirmala magazine while also juggling my life as a full-time mom to my 22-months old son. I’m also currently, though still under the radar, venturing into the baking business selling homemade cookies, cupcakes and delicious goodies. I guess this one comes from my love of cooking.

Personally, I’m a fan of your style. How would you describe it?

Thank you, Leija! I would probably describe my personal style as casual edgy chic. I’m all about comfort but I also love looking sharp, put-together and chic. I wear clothes that fit and complement my figure and body type. I love simple and timeless pieces in monochromatic colors, or denim. But I also love a pop of vibrant colors, like red, cobalt blue, or yellow. I also love pieces that have that 70’s and rock ‘n roll vibe to them.

Who’s your biggest style inspiration and why?

My biggest style inspiration first and foremost would be my mother (Andang Gunawan –red). I love how she always put together outfit that looked so effortless, so timeless, so classic and so chic all at once. She has that Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly vibe! Nicole Richie, Carey Mulligan, Lisa Bonet, Steven Tyler and Katharine Hepburn are also definitely some of my fashion inspirations.

Your mom is close to the fashion industry. Does she influence your style at all?

Yes, in a way, she has. She has taught me that timeless and classic pieces will always be on trend, but you can jazz them up with your own twist to make them more personal, to suit your personality. Though we both have different styles and tastes, we’re pretty similar in some ways. For example, we both love a fabulous piece of costume jewelry that can make simple basic items such as a white t-shirt or shirt and a dark skinny jeans to look awesome. I still borrow stuff from my mom occasionally, that’s a bonus.

Do you follow the trend? What’s your all-time favorite?

I try to keep up with understanding the current trends instead of pressuring myself to follow them when I know it’s completely unflattering to me. Not all that are currently trendy would suit all body type. I’ve taught myself to accept my body and understand them so I know how to dress accordingly. Basically showing my best assets instead of flaunting the flaws in trends that doesn’t suit my body type.

My all-time favorite would have to be a simple black boyfriend blazer, a dark skinny jeans and a black slim leather jacket. These are key pieces to any wardrobe staples. They can never go out of style and they’re easy to mix and match with whatever fashion mood you’re in. I also love any spring/summer floral prints.

Your favorite place to shop?

I love shops like Zara, H&M and Topshop. I also love designer brands such as Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Pour La Victoire, Elizabeth and James. I’m also a big fan of online shopping. I love ASOS.com, net-a-porter.com, and shopkitson.com.

Name three of your favorite latest purchase.

It would have to be this amazing nude strappy flat shoes and floral print jeans from Zara, and an olive utility jacket from H&M.
