Behind the spotlight of Paris Fashion Week, such a sad news came out about spectacular Dior couturier.The fashion house stated that they have zero tolerance for any racism including anti-Semitism and apparently there’s no exception, even for John Galliano. He had been officially ousted from his position as chief designer at Christian Dior because of his insulting video depicting racism and anti-Semitic remarks, captured at a bar in Paris. A Dior representative labeled the video as “deeply offensive statements and conduct by John Galliano”.
Just a week before the video was captured, Galliano was arrested as a couple reported him for making anti-Semitic verbal assault. The couple claimed Galliano’s insults included “dirty Jewish face” and “Asian bastard”. The case is still being investigated by Paris Police. According to French law, the penalty for defamation can be one year in prison, a fine of 45,000 euros, or $61,884 at current exchange, or both.
“We unequivocally condemn the statements made by John Galliano, which are in total contradiction to the long-standing core values of Christian Dior,” said Sidney Toledano, chairman and chief executive officer of Christian Dior Couture.
Various comments appeared towards Galliano’s case. “All I can say is that he was and is a brilliant designer, and I hope that fashion will have some memories. Everyone is sad, and the only thing I’m certain of is that he did an amazing thing for Dior and he gave so much pleasure. I will miss him a lot,” said Maria Luisa Poumaillou, fashion director at Printemps. While Alexandra Shulman, British Vogue editor in chief said “I think Galliano made a terrible mistake and such offensive behavior could not be ignored. It is all the same true that he has a huge talent and has contributed enormously to the resurrection of the house of Dior”.
Some people keep supporting this genius designer, but some become upset about his actions. As Karl Lagerfeld stated, “I’m furious, if you want to know. I’m furious that it could happen, because the question is no longer even whether he really said it. The image has gone around the world. It’s a horrible image for fashion, because they think that every designer and everything in fashion is like this. This is what makes me crazy in that story”. Another statement came from Natalie Portman, face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume. “As an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way,” Portman said.
