Indonesian Beauty Secrets

I often wish there are more bath & body products from Indonesia. We have plenty of natural resources – herbs, flowers, plants that have been used for generations and really work. I remember when I was around 11 years old, my hair was really thin and I had some problems with hairfall and my mom suggested I used cem-ceman rambut. I put the smelly lotion on my hair religiously before bed, put towel on my pillow, washed my hair in the morning and keep doing that 2-3 times a week for 1 month and like a miracle, my hair started to thicken and I had less and less of hair falling off.

And that’s just one example.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with lulur, masker, bedak dingin, air mawar among others? Or have you ever tried to remove rough skin from your heels by scrubbing it with a batu apung? Or rubbing aloe vera on your scalp to make your hair grow faster and thicker?

Sure we have a few body care brands by the giant corporations, but I have also been waiting for more independent brands to come up with beauty products packaged in a more modern way, without losing the Indonesian identity. I think that if we have more options we’ll be able to do a few things at once : preserve our Indonesian heritage, help out the local farmers/business owners and be “greener” (local products are environmentally friendlier because they don’t have to be transported by airplanes which in the end helps to reduce carbon emissions). And of course, look and smell fabulous in doing it!

To-Ye might be what I’ve been looking for.

To-Ye (means “water” in Balinese) was conceived because of the owner’s desire to create great products, preserve our cultural heritage and the earth. They are inspired by the cultures and customs of Indonesian women in taking care of their beauty that have been passed down from generation to generation.

They dig local and natural resources that are abundant in Indonesia in creating a line of body care products as a prove that whatever our own land has provided for us is comparable (if not more superior) than products from outside the country.

They also try their best to package their products in an environmentally friendly way by reducing unnecessary wrapping / packaging and using reusable materials (most of their products come in glass bottles). They also apply this principle in sourcing for the materials for their products. For example, they use orange peels collected from a juice factory as one of the ingredients of their lulur products. Cool eh?

To-Ye has a wide arrays of products. Lulur bubuk, Lulur gel, cemceman melati (for hair), massage oil, aromatherapy and essential oils – all using plants and flowers from Indonesian earth like pala, nilam, batu apung, jahe, sereh, kayumanis, kenanga, gaharu, cengkeh and many more.

I tried using Minyak Pijat Rempah Jahe one night while getting a massage at home and I was smitten by how delicious it smells! I suggested it to my sister and she returned the oil the following night with only 1/4 of its content left :D

I also used Lulur Kopi Jahe and it also smelled heavenly. Admittedly, I created a bit of mess with the powdery stuff (maybe I need more practise) but afterwards my entire bathroom smells like a coffee shop and who doesn’t like that? Moreover, To-Ye products are very affordable. A pack of Lulur cost only IDR 8,000 and you can use them 2-3 times.

I am looking forward to trying out more products from To-Ye and I wish they plan to create some body lotions or body butters using these good stuff (can you imagine kopi jahe body butter? YUM!) as I don’t see any moisturizing products in their line. And while we’re at it, I also wish they’d simplify the ordering process. I respect their decision not to sell their products in conventional retail counters but they should’ve made online orders available to make it easier for people like us to enjoy To-Ye products.

For more info, please visit to-ye.blogspot.com or call 021 – 252 3178 to place your orders.

  • dunia_dandan

    TENTU aku akan mencobanya.
Gw demen bgt dah pampering2 gini…

  • Koukla

    Julie,
Wah sayang ya, emang kamu di mana lokasinya? Coba aja telpon mereka, siapa tau bisa dikirim.

    DYS,
Bener dys, sebenernya produk2 Indonesia sih udah lama dikenal cuma mungkin masih sedikit yg mengemasnya secara menarik / modern yah. Kalo Juara packaging & marketingnya bagus banget ya cuma muahal banget! Rp. 435.000 for a tub of body creme? Are you kidding me?

btw mo nanya donk…dulu umur 11 pake cem-ceman apa? kayaknya manjur bgt

  • Koukla

  • vanness77

i think i’m gonna give it a try. selama ini pake lulur yang lain alergi, merah-merah and gatel, siapa tau pake ini ga apa2. hmm..pengen coba garam mandi & essential oilnya
